Phon

for flute, saxophone, percussion, piano and electronics (2022)

Among other things, phon refers to the measurement unit of sound intensity. By translating the loudness perception of any sound event into a comparably perceived loudness of the sine tone at a frequency of 1000 Hz, a scientific attempt is made to render the psychoacoustic sensation of dynamics measurable on the basis of this abstract. What amazes me from a musical point of view is the contrast between the two components chosen to create a scale: the majority of sound events in the world are noises and therefore inherently complex in their spectrum, a sine tone is a single harmonic oscillation, in all probability it is impossible to obtain a clearer sound. The incongruity of these two states served as my mental inspiration, whereupon what followed in each case was a flow of ideas. Approximately where measurability ends, music begins for me - they are spaces for play.
